City College Plymouth – Marine offer

Two years ago, City College Plymouth became part of the South West Institute of Technology bringing in over £2m of investment with £1.5m of that going into our state of the art Oceansgate Phase 2 facility, which is due to open in July 2021 with full curriculum delivery from September 2021

Situated in the Marine Enterprise Zone and future Freezone, this innovative and flexible facility will allow City College Plymouth to work closely with the opportunities available, developing the training and skills required to support the marine and maritime industries. The facility will be equipped with latest technologies such as a 5 axis CNC milling machine and a state of the art 3D printer, and we are open to opportunities which allow organisations of all sizes to work collaboratively with us to further enhance these facilities, sharing resources such as space, skilled staff and equipment.

Our journey linked to the maritime industry has seen major investment in this subject area, not only in terms of financial investment as mentioned above, but also in terms of the courses we offer at City College Plymouth. Already we have the UK’s only foundation degree in marine autonomy and now we are working with our awarding body the University of Plymouth to develop a level 6 marine autonomous systems bachelor degree , which will lead into the level 7 provision offered at the university. Alongside this we are working with the sector to understand their need at level 1, 2 and 3, including subject specialisms such as boatbuilding and composites to ensure that new employees have the ability to enter the sector and progress along their career pathways.

Maritime now sits firmly within the colleges strategic action plan and will continue to develop over time ensuring that we are positioned within one of the largest maritime zones in the UK, supporting defence, leisure and marine engineering businesses with the skills and training required to support their future workforce.

As part of the South West Institute of Technology along with our desire to become demand led and demand informed this venture will ensure that we are working in collaboration with our partners, whilst becoming innovative, working closely with organisations big and small from the maritime and manufacturing sectors, whilst developing new relationships with our Oceansgate neighbours for many years to come.
