Bristol Robotics Laboratory offers world-leading expertise in robotics, autonomous systems and embedded AI, supporting maritime innovation from concept through to deployment. We develop intelligent sensing, perception and control systems for autonomous and remotely operated platforms operating in challenging environments. Our facilities include wet labs, test pools and advanced prototyping spaces, enabling development and validation of marine-relevant technologies. We work with industry on feasibility studies, collaborative R&D, prototyping and testing, and commercialisation support. Through consultancy and innovation programmes, we help organisations adopt robotics and automation to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability across maritime operations, including inspection, environmental monitoring and offshore applications.
Our team includes internationally recognised experts in robotics, AI and autonomous systems, including professors leading research in safe autonomy, human-robot interaction and intelligent systems. We combine academic excellence with applied engineering, delivering solutions in real-world, complex environments.
Bristol Robotics Lab has partnered with organisations whose challenges directly mirror maritime needs. From Leonardo Helicopters, Frazer-Nash, Atkins Realis and National Highways on autonomous systems in safety-critical and hazardous environments, to SMEs including HydroSurv, Airborne Robotics and Zero Point Motion on sensing and platform technologies. The same capabilities that deliver on land and in the air translate directly to inspection, monitoring and autonomy at sea.
UWE Bristol delivers wide-ranging research and innovation in engineering, environmental technologies and digital systems, alongside business support, (micro)SME incubation and skills development through initiatives such as Future Space and Degree Apprenticeships.
