As the maritime sector embraces digitalisation, automation and autonomous technologies, demand for specialist skills in engineering, marine autonomy and cyber security continues to grow. City College Plymouth is expanding its higher education offer and working with employers to help develop the skilled workforce needed to support the region’s future.
The College has secured more than £2 million through the Office for Students’ Defence Related Skills Funding Competition to support higher-level technical education, specialist equipment and facilities. As one of only five Defence Technical Excellence Colleges in the UK, City College Plymouth is strengthening the link between education, industry and the high-value careers that will drive economic growth and technological resilience.
Its higher education offer includes qualifications in applied cyber security, marine engineering, marine autonomous vehicles, integrated technologies engineering and applied computer science, creating pathways into critical roles across maritime, defence and advanced technology sectors.
New opportunities for 2027
From January 2027, the College plans to introduce Higher National Certificates in Business and Management, Forensic Science and Esports, alongside Higher Apprenticeships in Associate Project Management, Technician Scientist and Civil Engineering Senior Technician.
From September 2027, new modular pathways in computing and engineering will offer more flexible routes into higher-level qualifications through the Government’s Lifelong Learning Entitlement, subject to eligibility and course approval.
These developments create new opportunities for employers to recruit, upskill and retain talent while helping shape the skills their industries need.
City College Plymouth is keen to work with maritime, engineering and technology businesses to develop employer-led training, apprenticeship opportunities and stronger industry partnerships.
