Maritime Ambassadors Network

Maritime Ambassadors Network

Maritime UK have established an ambassadors network to support careers activity in schools and colleges nationally. Currently all that work is happening remotely, but in time we hope that will go back to being face to face and onsite visits.

We are working with an organisation called Inspiring the Future who run the scheme. They have more than 1000 education organisations across the UK on their database who use their website to book industry professionals. They work with primary and secondary state schools and colleges. The sorts of events that you might be asked to support are as a guest speaker, to support specific classroom or project work, attend a careers fair, carry out mock interviews or other careers and employability activities. All we ask is that you are happy to share your own careers story and talk about your industry. We don’t expect you to be an expert in all roles available in the sector.

We currently have 121 ambassadors registered for the programme and we are determined to increase that number. You are asked only to give one hour a year to the scheme as a minimum. You might be requested to support schools or colleges at one off events, or over time you might carry out a series of events building up a relationship with a single organisation.

We have an ambition to have 200 ambassadors in our network by the end of the year, and that our ambassadors represent the whole maritime sector from port operatives to marine biologists, superyacht crew to harbour masters and all other roles in between. We are also determined that our network is made up of a diverse group of individuals and geographically representative to support on site activity once that is possible.

Our network was launched on 23/9/20, since when we have attended 111 virtual events and have spoken to over 13,300 children, the majority of whom are primary age.

Why volunteer as an ambassador?

“Volunteering is about the difference you can make by being someone different, not the teachers. You are not there for anyone’s gain but theirs. Some young people don’t get that normally. That is what makes volunteering worthwhile.” Quote from ‘The value of volunteering’ published Jan 2021 Inspiring the Future.
