Session: Commercial opportunity: Decarbonisation
The long established norm of diesel and fuel oil for maritime propulsion is shifting quickly in reaction to pressure from regulators and society in general, forecast changes in fuel price and availability, and most especially government decarbonisation targets. For maritime businesses questions abound about what fuel or fuels will predominate, how to operate with these on vessels and in ports and harbours, and most importantly what changes in their business model will they have to make. This session includes some recent technology developments, some decarbonisation projects, and a view from floating offshore wind which is a leading demand sector for clean propulsion vessels.

Session: Attracting, Retaining and training the right talent. Introduction to the MUKSW Careers & Skills programme session
A decarbonisation survey report published in May 2023 by Lloyds List identified people and skills as the biggest risk to energy transition with over 51% of respondents identifying this as the major issue. Skills shortages and skills gaps feature as major issues for many employers while a south west population ageing a third faster than the rest of the UK contributes to the region’s recruitment challenges.
This session announces the MUKSW Careers & Skills programme and highlights some successful programmes that employers and maritime organisations are using to address issues of skills vacancies, closing skills gaps, increasing training and encouraging employee retention and a more diverse workforce.
