Maritime UK South West: the leading UK ocean technology cluster

Maritime UK South West is a public, business, research partnership which brings together the breadth of ocean economy to create a world leading ocean technology cluster. We enable innovation and collaboration, finding the right business support and skills and driving strategic development and investment.

The OECD predict that the global Ocean Economy could double in size by 2030, reaching a gross value added of around USD 3 trillion. The South West of the UK produces world leading ocean economy research and innovation. We aim to better exploit these assets to put the Maritime UK South West ocean technology cluster at the heart of this growth.

Maritime UK South West aims to champion and promote our sector, internally, nationally and abroad, driving clean growth and building on our centres of excellence in offshore renewables, marine autonomy and clean ocean technology.

Maritime UK South West partners with Cornwall Marine Network to represent the South West Ocean Economy and is a member of the national cluster Maritime UK.

Centres of excellence

The cluster brings together a network of partners to develop and promote four overlapping and complimentary world class marine centres of excellence with the potential to exploit global market opportunities and create transformational economic growth for the region. These include:

Overlap of Centres of excellence

The Maritime UK South West Ocean Technology Cluster accounts for:

  • £2.54 billion in gross value add per year to the economy of the South Coast or 5% of the overall sector.
  • Almost 4,000 businesses and 25,000 jobs
  • World beating research offer from 21 research organisations including the UK’s largest marine institute

The Maritime UK South West Strategic Board provides a wide range of expertise across marine, maritime and ocean technology.

The aim of the board is to provide strategic leadership to the cluster, linking and championing the cluster into national and international initiatives and acting as regional sector champions. The board provides expertise covering:

  • Ports and shipping and smart ports,
  • Marine autonomy, AI and robotics,
  • Offshore renewables,
  • Safety and regulation at sea,
  • Marine, superyachts and marine leisure,
  • Broad range of marine science and technology,
  • The three Local Enterprise Partnerships covering the Great South West.
