Maritime UK SW has internationally significant strengths in environmental technologies, advanced engineering and ocean science and therefore is well placed to respond to the low carbon challenge. Maritime UK has numerous work strands dedicated to this area, including creation of a Maritime UK SW Clean Maritime Roadmap, establishing local charging/e-propulsion ecosystems, national innovation activity on propulsion, work on an annual clean marine tech event with MDL Marinas in June 21, and the development of a SW Innovation Service.
Earlier this year, Maritime UK SW hosted a Clean Maritime Summit co-hosted with the MDL Marinas Clean Tech Boatshow which was attended by the Maritime Minister, Robert Courts, MP. The event brought together key stakeholders to scope an action plan or roadmap to corral resources and collaborative activity to accelerate the cleaning of our sector. This will be agreed and put into action at a meeting of the group later this month. In the next MUKSW newsletter we will be able to share the action plan and enable a wider group to participate in its delivery.
This week Maritime UK SW will convene 50 key stakeholders in London including the Princess Yachts Limited, Sunseeker international, Serco, Rolls Royce, Volvo, Mann, Cummins the research community including University of Exeter and Plymouth and key Government figures to seek a solution to the decarbonisation of marine vessels between 500 and 7,500HP.
Today we are also holding the first local ecosystem event of its kind – designed to enable small business to take on electric charging points and start to procure existing electric and hybrid propulsion units such that we create the infrastructure and demand to build out functioning clean marine zones. This builds on the previous successes in Plymouth, installing electric charging points and the delivery of the first sea going electric passenger ferry.
There are also a wide range of speakers from the South West championing best practice and low carbon speaking at COP26.
The South West also achieved great success in the Clean Maritime Demonstrator Competition. Maritime UK SW is working to help coordinate winners from the region and other innovators such that we in the South West can attract further investment in subsequent rounds of the Clean Maritime Demonstrator Competition (the extension of which into a long term programme was announced in last weeks budget) and other investment opportunities.
In terms of wider clean maritime innovation, Maritime UK SW is working with partners to push the Ocean Futures programme, at the heart of which is the ambition to create a South West Innovation programme to support clean, autonomous, and digital innovation in the maritime space.
