European Space Agency Maritime Decarbonisation Funding Workshop  (3 calls: autonomy, port decarbonisation, green propulsion)

Join Maritime UK South West, ESA Space Solutions, Cornwall Space Cluster, Dorset Council & Bournemouth University for a workshop on Maritime Decarbonisation. The session will cover the support available from Maritime UK South West, South West Space Partnership as well as specific details of the commercialisation funding coming from ESA.

Date: Tuesday 12th November 09.00-13.00
Location: Pengelly room, Kingston Maurward College, Dorchester DT2 8PY

Maritime is a key sector for ESA, it plays a fundamental role in life on Earth, accounting for 95% of global trade, a vital source of food and energy and home to multiple delicate ecosystems. Protecting this important resource is a high priority.

Maritime decarbonisation is a central element of maritime sustainability. Shipping is recognised as the most efficient form of commercial transport in terms of CO2 emissions per tonne of cargo transported in one mile. However, due to the scale of the industry, maritime transport is still a significant contributor to the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions (around 3% of total global CO2 emissions).

The IMO has targeted halving shipping related emissions by 2050. On its own this is a significant target, but it becomes ever more challenging considering the scale of goods moved by shipping is forecast to triple in the same period.

European Space Agency Maritime Decarbonisation workshop covers a broad subject that requires the involvement and advancements from various stakeholders. To mirror the multifaceted nature of the required transformations and address the specific needs of different decarbonisation approaches, the Call has been organised into sub-themes:

  • Decarbonisation through Maritime Autonomy (opening: 31st October 2024)
  • Ports Decarbonisation (opening: November 2024)
  • Green Propulsion (opening: January 2025)

Within these thematic calls ESA will support Feasibility Studies and Demonstration Projects. Feasibility Studies allow successful teams to analyse, design and plan their intended service. Demonstration Projects allow successful teams to put their intended service into practice. Teams will test their service in the market by running a pilot with significant users and, by the end of the project, the service should be operational.
